Superstition can be said to be a totally irrational belief, often deep seated, in the magical effects of an action or ritual. It is frequently believed by superstitious people that participation in such activities will bring them either good or bad luck

Supernatural events, witchcraft and even religion are viewed by many people as being sheer superstition. Good luck charms can be seen as being based on superstition, as can the act of touching holy statues in the hope of altering ones life for the better.

Whilst there is no harm in any of these activities, superstition can reach an obsessive stage in true believers who often will not carry out any normal routine unless the ‘signs’ have been read.

Many people will not do anything on Friday the 13th, others will consider the advent of a black cat crossing their path to be a sign of luck or that a brown butterfly in the house is a sign that money is on the way.

Here are a few methods which teach how to cope with superstition, and not allow it to reach a stage of obsession. –

  • Avoid the belief in luck either bad or good. Take control of your own destiny, it is unlikely that outside influences will do it for you. Bad luck is frequently blamed for your own mistakes.
  • Be positive and proactive in your attitude. Make all decisions in a very decisive manner. These will act to counter the reliance on ‘the heavens’ to determine the outcome of your decision. If you are wrong, then you are wrong, luck had nothing to do with the result!
  • In all actions and decisions which you may make, believe in yourself and carry them through to their natural conclusion.

The fact that you wrecked you car on the almost empty express way had nothing to do with it being the 13th of the month, and certainly was not due to bad luck! It was due to you making bad decisions and either driving recklessly or driving under the influence.
